I found CrossFit 4+ years ago from my brother-in-law because I was in the worst shape of my life.  I had always been in shape since I played sports through high school and college and was struggling to find something that I enjoyed and allowed me to stay in shape.  It wasn’t working for me to just go into a globo-gym 3-4 times a week so I needed something different.

My brother-in-law told me to check-out crossfit.com and to read through as many of the journal articles as I could as well as review/watch the videos they had on the site before I was planning to visit him later on in the month.  During that visit, he would put me through a sample “WOD” with one of his friends and himself.  Well, I read/watched all I could and I was motivated to try this “crossfit thing”.  We did the first workout and the rest is history.  CrossFit keeps me motivated and coming back for more because I am always getting better, trying or doing something new, plus I now get to see all the improvements/changes of our members on a day-to-day basis since I became an affiliate owner in late 2008.

Chris-Mack

Chris Mack – Partner

What drew me to CFit-As I started to get older I was getting bored with the regular weightlifting routine and having played competitive sports earlier in life I found Crossfit to bring back fill that competitive void. Additionally, the mix of Gymnastic, weightlifting, and cardio continually makes each workout unique and challenging.

What keeps me coming back- 1- Seeing other people do things they have never been able to do. 2. The opportunity to get better than the day before.

Dan-Lekki

Dan Lekki – Partner

I always thought of myself as an athletic and in shape person. I felt like I could walk into any situation and not have a issue with it. A few years back, Travis called me up and told me to come to the garage, he had something he wanted me to try. I what seemed to be a pretty mundane workout, I was put on my ass and sore for a week. Unlike most, I wasn’t hooked, I was scared. But three and a half years later, I find myself engulfed in “the sport of fitness”

Personally, I favor the lifts in CrossFit, specifically Olympic Lifting. The evoulution of the sport keeps me wanting more and continuning to find new areas of education to help me grow as athlete, trainer, and partner of H.O.T.Side CrossFit.

The Sisters Sober!

Elizabeth McGrail – Trainer

I was playing rugby in college when a friend introduced me to crossfit.  She described it as “having a personal trainer in a group fitness class”.  Two weeks later, my walk to class took double the time because my legs were so sore; I was hooked! After graduation, I moved back home and found H.O.T.Side.   The community of Crossfit is what draws me back day, after day. There is no other organization that can bring together a group of people to motivate, push limits and inspire like this community.  The feats that are accomplished daily inside the box are unimaginable to the unfamiliar eye.  I knew instantly that I would never move away from it, so when they asked me to start coaching in the spring of 2012, I couldn’t say yes fast enough!  Currently, I love helping others set goals and watching them crush those goals everyday.  The people at HOTSide have become a family; we live to push limits, break boundaries and better the community every single day.  I am hoping to help bring Crossfit Kids to the HOTSide community in the near future, so we can expand our family even further! To end, I leave those apprehensive about trying crossfit with one of my favorite quotes: “do something that scares you, everyday”.  Who knows, you might just turn around and surprise yourself.  ;-)

Liz-Smo

Liz Smoczynski – Trainer

I’m Liz Smoczynski, a Level 1 Trainer at HOTSide Crossfit. When I’m not training or coaching at the box, I am a licensed social worker who works with youth ages 12-21 on substance abuse and mental health issues. My athletic background consisted of dance (tap, ballet, & jazz) since the age of 6.  I also love outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, canoeing, etc and continue to take dance classes as an adult.

I love the athlete Crossfit has allowed me to become. It has not been an easy journey (I could not complete one push up from my knees when I started), but it has improved my quality of life ten fold with increased energy, more confidence, and improved strength. Most importantly it has given me access to a supportive community of people who push me to be a better athlete physically and mentally. It’s impossible to not keep coming back for more at HOTSide!
